~ CELLULOID ~: THE PAPER: The Life of Journalist

about two weeks ago, I got to a computer room of my faculty and although there always were my companions, instead of a class, I found a newborn, but no less interesting film session. So, unexpectedly, that afternoon I was a spectator of a very good movie. I immersed myself in the frame It was a thrilling time trial team in a small New York newspaper. The name of the film: "The Paper" (in context, "Journal"), starring Michael Keaton irreverent, the role of ace reporter Henry Hackett. And although we had requested, the prints were not made to wait so appropriate stimulus film.

many stereotypes circulating about a journalist! The most notorious case is that when we speak of the character, comes to mind the image of a disheveled and accelerated. Always talking, but writing. A whole omniscient and omnipresent. Or without much adornment, as his enemies call him an interloper to the core, but that, despite aggravating, is possessed of a particular charism and incomprehensibly motivation surprising, considering the low pay they receive in return for their labor.

are these peculiar motivations - contrary to the aforementioned stereotypes - ones that go unnoticed by the common people most of the time. Witness the lengths to which reporters can get our beloved, only to publicize the truth openly and without distortion, is something that very few achieve. And the importance of being aware of the difficulties facing a daily journalist, becomes much more relevant when one decides to set out on the road so exciting profession.

This is my personal case. But I think, frankly, that whoever choose to continue such an admirable profession, should be guided primarily by vocation. And this means that if I decide to be a journalist, I should be with my hopes, my dreams and my ideals above vanity, above any uncertainty that causes me the changing present and uncertain future - which is no longer so uncertain when seen to have clear objectives - over bad advice, the foolish and ill-timed words of many people tripping harmful that is one with every step forward.

If that's the basic formula! Desires, dreams and ideals in trace quantities. But it all turns to cheap trickery and selfish if only satisfies me and helps me. So, with all that, I also try to meet and help the society I belong: more than men or women, young or old, poor, hungry, or rich, religious, political or megalomaniac, rather than segregation , the man himself, without distinction, in essence. Rather than "irrational masses, people thinking and eager to enlightenment. Homelands rather than invented, a dying culture ...

So, as a first condition for this race: we must be as realistic as we are required and as idealistic as we are prohibited. Grounded, with feet on the ground, but dreamy and with the wings in the sky. Let there be balance. Without excesses.

must also be responsible. Journalism provides its elected a weapon that would kill many malicious even cherish: the power to manipulate public opinion through various media genres and to achieve great changes in society or in the lives of others. Such power comes from credibility, seriousness and objectivity that professes, both the communicator, as the medium for this work.

The press, by its very nature detailed and enduring information - not generalized and ephemeral as radio or TV - is suitable for deep analysis of reality and its protagonists. Those seeking a fuller understanding of the facts, always consume a newspaper, either to confirm the details not captured in the electronic media, as well as to search data that were not communicated to them.

But this is usual. What we find, without difficulty, in theories and books on the subject. Something as subjective as art and film, as is the case with "The Paper", shows a more human view of those who practice journalism on compelling and difficult situations are not so far from the reality of many.

Indeed, the true journalist is constantly at the mercy of the circumstances of his profession, which are always changing, which forces you to rearrange its priorities in the most unexpected moments. In many cases go hungry, humiliation, has money in cents - not tickets - To take a simple can of soda from the vending machine, that name a few of the many hardships.

And although sometimes travel to faraway places and exotic elite attending social events, they see face to face with people almost mythological view Oscar de la Renta while drinking a glass of whiskey thinner and old, should be aware of reality, its reality, and not be entranced by the pleasures of a world that is not yours. Although journalist peeks, and sometimes even mimic other areas of life so that others know and understand, in these cases the state is like a Cinderella who has until some time for dancing in the palace. Who wants to be a journalist must be aware of the sacrifices that involve childish or no comfort.

Now ... there may be journalists in the world live with some financial comfort. But knowing what we know about the immolation that suffers in this profession, do you believe that I can not stop these ambitious charm of money and, eventually, forget the true meaning of their profession? Perhaps the high purchasing power they do not always come from an honest job. Perhaps from 'minds "that they bought in exchange for keeping someone happy or not guilty that really is not, who knows? ...

But leaving aside the vagaries, the family is perhaps the greatest luxury that a journalist can have, if sufficiently intelligent and balanced. As Hackett, many have the opportunity to achieve a better work option. As Hackett, many have families to think about. As Hackett, many are passionate in their performance reporting. As Hackett, many are faced with injustices that deserve to be clarified and that only they can clarify. But unlike Hackett, a few are presented simultaneously all these circumstances, and in these cases, very few have the courage to bet "double or nothing" in the game of life.

the end, Hackett risked the financial stability of his family by rejecting a better job, that partly from pride and partly to continue with important research, as well as being first for his newspaper, would clarify For two young men unjustly accused of murder.

Certainly all these turbulent situations are only reserved for cosmopolitan cities, such as New York. There are many ways to find things in cities like this, a little less difficult for a good and clever journalist, be good and reliable sources . So many people have much to say that there are only stop to listen.

Tip: another essential requirement for the journalist. If it is difficult to get valuable information, many turn to trickery to get pious. Hackett, for example, was very wise to conclude that "with a board and an arrogant attitude will go anywhere," [1] . This premise staff helped him enter a police station to talk to a high authority, unchallenged by anyone, without warning or without being asked any identification, barriers, concrete, would have caused enormous loss of time in your research.

In conclusion and not to prolong matters further, primarily with eight aspects to personal opinion, should raise the profile of a true journalist:

1. Balance between realism and idealism. 2. High sense of justice. 3. Responsibility. 4. Awareness of reality and self-employment. 5. Willingness to sacrifice. 6. Balancing family and work. 7. Instinct for improvisation and intelligence to know to decide. 8. Cunning in every way. All of this relying on an indispensable cornerstone is vocation. Hopefully that this formula is enriched with more elements to the passing of time, for the good of my colleagues and myself as well.
